The video is In an Instant: The Madness of Crowds, I found it on the Films on Demand on the PCC library database.
The video reflects on how individual human behavior changes when you’re in a crowd. “Individual human behavior is far different from human behavior in a crowd.” “Crowd think,” I believe is when our perspectives and logics change while in a massive crowd of people, when there is chaos. In the Boston bombing, some are hardwired to run, others hardwired to fight, some are ready to help, and some are in a hurry to get out of chaos. Some are quick at taking out there mobile devices to capture the moment where they may or may not feel safe but they still do it. And I believe that sometimes it is necessary but there may be people who need help. In an experiment conducted they found that we all tend to follow crowds. When we are surrounded by others all logic is forgotten, Of course depending on the situation. But it’s all basic instinct. The different ways everyone reacts to such situations is very interesting. “We have been socialized beyond the point of reason.” And I believe that this quote is true. We base our reactions depending on how others will react. In my opinion, this people’s reactions are far from their norms. In crowds we blindly move in a single direction.
Auguste Comte perspective, setting laws will maintain social order and will hold society together. Karl Marx’s perspective would be that as individuals/humans we are capable of shaping and making our own environment to some extent and change must be encouraged. According to Emile Durkheim, when social control has been broken down, individuals are left to their own devices; anomie. A society needs clear rules to help guide. Without guidance there’s chaos. Such as what happened in Boston, everyone lost control after the bombing, there was no regulations at the moment everyone went crazy their common norms were not being regulated. The way the individuals reacted in the bomb situation is predictable.
I think that the paradigm that is most represented in this video is the interactionist perspective. The sociological approach on how individuals interact in a moment of life or death. Many have different social interactions in chaos. Some of us feel the need to help, others want to fight, and other just want to escape.
